GENERAL AND RESTORATIVE DENTISTS
General dentistry focuses on the prevention of the major causes of dental problems, dental decay and periodontal disease. The general dentist provides treatment for these and other common dental problems though regular check-ups, preventive care, restoration with fillings and crowns, esthetic treatments, and many other types of services.
Dental Practice Group
706-721-2696 - No Referral required. New Patients must allow a comprehensive dental exam with complete set of X-rays. Arrive thirty minutes early to allow time to find parking and to fill out all necessary paperwork. We are located on the third floor of the Dental School. Just take a left off the elevators and follow the signs to the Dental Practice Group. These patients do NOT need to check in the lobby at the business office.
Dr. John Blalock
Dr. Blalock currently provides patient care within the DPG concentrating his efforts on providing general dentistry with a comprehensive approach. He devotes much of his time to educating senior level students on comprehensive general dentistry, but also maintains a very active practice in the DPG. Dr. Bill Brackett
Dr. Brackett’s graduate training includes cosmetic, restorative and preventive dentistry. His research includes the latest advances in bonding of dental materials to teeth. WBRACKETT@mcg.edu
Dr. Martha Brackett
Dr. Brackett practiced general dentistry for fourteen years before joining us here at MCG. Her interests lie in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Se habla Español. MBRACKETT@mcg.edu
Dr. Rick Callan
Dr. Callan spent 17 years as a private practitioner in the Augusta area. He is the Director of the Practice Management curriculum at the School of Dentistry and teaches clinically in both Fixed and Operative Dentistry. His service interests include the administration of dental treatment to the underserved and elderly population of the state. Dr. Frank Caughman
Dr. Caughman received his DMD from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1979, where he also completed a 2-year General Practice Residency. Prior to being named the Associate Dean for Patient Services in 2003, he served for 10 years as Chairman of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation. Since 1985, Dr Caughman has provided his patients at MCG many general dentistry services including regular check-ups, routine fillings, crowns, bridges, and other esthetic procedures. Dr. Daniel Chan
Dr. Chan’s interests lie in all phases of restorative dentistry with emphasis on prevention, minimal-invasive dentistry and esthetic restorative dentistry. He has 27 years of practice experience plus he is fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese. DCHAN@mcg.edu
Dr. John Coleman
Dr. Coleman is a graduate of MUSC College of Dental Medicine in Charleston , SC. After which he completed a two-year General Practice Residency at MUSC, he has practiced in Lake City, SC for 25 years. Dr. Jeril Cooper
After graduating from MCG School of Dentistry, Dr. Cooper enjoyed over 29 years in a thriving general and cosmetic dentistry practice. He has been a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry since 1987. Dr. Cooper recently joined the faculty working the majority of his time with Senior Students in the Comprehensive Care Clinic. Dr. Kevin Frazier
Dr. Frazier provides general restorative dentistry services including fillings, crowns, and other esthetic procedures. He has 22 years of private practice and academic experience since completing residency training in 1984. KFRAZIER@mcg.edu
Dr. Steve Hackman
Dr. Hackman received his DDS from Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1975, completed an advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program/ 2yr, and was the Director of the AEGD/ 2yr Residency Program as a Colonel in the United States Army Dental Corps. A Board Certified Member of the Academy of General Dentistry with over thirty years of clinical practice, Dr. Hackman provides his patients with comprehensive care with an emphasis on restorative and esthetic dentistry to include implants. Dr. Barry Hammond
Dr. Hammond brings 20 years of private practice experience to the DPG. His interests lie in helping his patients achieve optimal oral health and regain their self confidence by creating beautiful smiles. Dr. Van Haywood
Van B. Haywood, D.M.D., is Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation, School of Dentistry, Medical College of Georgia. A 1974 alumni of MCG, he was in private practice 7 years in Augusta, Georgia and taught at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in Operative and Prosthodontics for 12 years before coming to MCG in 1993. He teaches in the Castings course, the Occlusion course and the Esthetics course. In 1989, he co-authored the first publication in the world on Nightguard vital bleaching (at-home bleaching) with Dr. Harald Heymann, and in 1997 co-authored the first article on extended treatment (six-months) of tetracycline-stained teeth using this technique. Dr. Gary Holmes
Dr. Holmes has been involved in patient care for over 15 years. His practice involves Comprehensive Dental Care including routine dental check-ups, esthetic and restorative dentistry, and replacement of missing teeth. Dr. Andrew Kious
Dr. Kious received his DDS from the University of Iowa in 1982. He completed a 1-year General Practice Residency in 1983 and a 2-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry program in 1990. He retired from the Air Force in 2006. Dr. Kious is a diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry and a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. David Lazarchik
